Baghdad (AIN) –A demonstration for the followers of the religious leader al-Sarkhi turned into riots and clashes with the security elements at the Furdous Square of central Baghdad on Saturday morning, when the demonstrators started throwing rocks on the security forces present at the Square.

The demonstrators demanded the government “to provide security and protection for their mosques and release the detainees who were arrested earlier.”

Reports from the demonstration stated that some demonstrators have been injured due to the clashes, noting that “Security elements blocked the roads leading to Furdous Square and forbid media outlets from approaching the demonstration.”

A governmental delegation arrived at the location but it did not start negotiations yet.
