One policeman was killed in an attack by unidentified gunmen in northern Kirkuk on Monday, an official security source said.
"Unknown gunmen shot down policeman Ali Majid Wahab while he was heading to work at Kubri police station in Rizkari area, (35 km) north of Kirkuk," the source, who is from the Kirkuk police joint operations room, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI).
Police patrol rushed to the scene and after combing the area arrested five suspects and seized two Kalashnikov assault rifles that were in their possession, the source added.
Meanwhile, the same source said an explosive charge went off near a police patrol in al-Huweija, 70 km southwest of Kirkuk, on Sunday, wounding one policeman and causing damage to the patrol vehicle.
