“Railway construction began in Iraq in 1902, part of the Berlin - Baghdad project, seen as a standard gauge through route. After the British invasion of 1914, Basra - Baghdad was built with surplus metre gauge equipment from India, and Iraq has a similar length now of both gauges. 2 529 km, 19 steam locos, 163 Diesels, 4 DMUs, 240 carriages, 3 280 wagons, 1 377 staff.”

As soon as war was declared with the Ottomans, Britain landed a force (composed largely of Indian soldiers) in southern Iraq, and eventually took Baghdad in 1917. Well..it could have...

He was one of the people who signed the Ottoman Concession of 1903, which gave Germany the rights to complete the Baghdad-Berlin railroad, the first half which had already been completed (Baghdad-Istanbul route--The Orient Express)

My knowledge and understanding of the British historical involvement in Iraq is second to none. To all Iraqis who read this post.....I understand...I really understand. Yes, Torquewrench...oil.....oil is the blood of civilization...during this period of human existence. The British were the first to commit resources and troops in both gulf wars...Kuwait was part of Iraq at one time and taken away as there were vast oil resources, they thought "they" left Iraq with nothing...but "they" were wrong. Oh yes I understand.

Many battles have been fought over resources for many reasons in history.

However, a spat over oil in Iraq with the Germans is absolutely not the reason for the start of the first World War.

While we're on the subject of 'second to none knowledge.' When the Gulf War broke out, my Uncle was flown privately to the Pentagon for discussions with the then President. On the QC, of course. They needed an History expert to inform them of the history, culture, religion of Iraq etc.

Guess they couldn't find one in America.
